Recommended Eye Examination Schedule by the Canadian Association or Optometrists
Each individual's medical history and lifestyle will influence how often they should be seen by an Optometrist. Our Optometrists will put all of these factors into consideration when deciding when you should be seen again. However, general guidelines have been established to help determine when your next eye examination should be.
The minimum recommended frequency for eye examinations for individuals of low risk is as follows:
- Infants and toddlers (birth to 24 months) -by age 6 months
- Preschool (3-5 years) -annually
- School age (6-19 years) -annually
- Adult (20-64 years) -every one to two years
- Older Adult (65 years and older) -annually
For high risk patients, the examining optometrist will use one's medical history to determine how often they should be having an eye examination. Some of the factors that will be taken into consideration are as follows:
Infants and toddlers and preschool: Premature birth; low birth weight; mother's health during pregnancy; family medical history; strabismus; or congenital eye disorders.
